For centuries, there has always seemed to be a windmill on the Dutch horizon.  The first eight Kinderdijk windmills were constructed in 1738 to cope with rising water levels.  Another eight were added in 1740 to protect the surrounding land from flooding.  The timeless sentinels have stood watch over the canals for well over 270 years.  Image # 06868.
